The Civil War (or the Second American Revolution or even the War of Northern Aggression) is a hard thing to describe to a nine year old. I think he got the gist of it but I'm not betting the mortgage on it. Above is the room where the surrender was signed. I have working through Shelby Foote's "The Civil War: A Narrative:. A difficult period in History to be sure but it is nice to be able to see some of it while living here in the East. The Doll on the couch, which at this time I can't remember the historic name it has (Silent Witness?) was present at the surrender. The junior officers passed the doll around and gave to their descendants until it was returned to the Park Service. |

The obligatory phtoto of the visitor on teh steps or in front of the site. Eamon did ok in his photo of me. It was during this part of our journey that we came up with our family motto "Wir sind nicht Touristen, wir sind Besucher or We're not Tourists, we're Visitors. |
